NILES - Chester Thomas Chmiel, 83, of Morris Drive, Niles, died following a brief illness at 7 p.m. Monday, April 6th, in his home. Mr. Chmiel was born on February 26, 1926, in Lackawanna, NY, to Ignatius and Antonina (Jalowka) Chmiel. In 1949 he graduated with his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, where in 1951 he earned his master of science degree in physical chemistry. Chester attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, earning his Ph.D. in physical chemistry, with minors in physics and organic chemistry in 1956. He later continued his education by earning his M.B.A. in business administration from Michigan State University in 1972. Chester retired in 1992 after 35 years of service from Uniroyal Plastics Company, Inc., Mishawaka. He had lived in Niles since 1995, coming from Granger, IN. He was a devoted member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, Niles. He was an avid Notre dame fan and enjoyed playing golf. He was a devoted family man, and loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. On April 14, 1956, in Lackawanna, he married the former Margaret F. Fox, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Stephanie (Denise Patzsch) Chmiel of Gladys, VA, Catherine (Kenneth) Chmiel-Goetzinger of Selma, IN, Carolyn (Michael Harris) Chmiel of Evanston, IL, Gerri (Mark Campbell) Chmiel of Cincinnati, OH, and Gregory Chmiel of West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Sean and Dylan Harris, and Colin Campbell; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sally Zackfeya and Anna Szczpanski; and brothers, Joseph, John and Edward Chmiel. A Mass of Christian Burial for Chester Thomas Chmiel will be held Monday, April 13th, at 11 a.m. in Saint Mary Catholic Church, . Committal rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Niles.
