Sophia Kuta
Apr. 20, 1919 - Mar. 10, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Sophia Kuta, 95 years old, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2015, at 11:26 PM of natural causes at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Sophia was born on April 20, 1919, in Lublin, Poland, and had lived in South Bend since 1951, emigrating from Germany. Sophia retired from the former Western State Bank where she was employed for 40 years. She was a parishioner of St. Casimir Catholic Church. On June 27, 1947, as Sophia Gieracz, she was united in marriage to Peter Kuta in Germany, who preceded her in death in October 1995. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Gieracz of South Bend, as well as a number of brothers and sisters who lived in Poland. Sophia is survived by her two sons, Robert and George (Joann), both of South Bend, and a sister, Daniela Ponikowska of Poland, along with several nieces and nephews. Sophia enjoyed being a homemaker, always baking and cooking great meals. There was always an extra plate at the dinner table for unexpected guests, especially during the holidays for her friends and neighbors who were alone or away from family. Sophia was a very caring and compassionate person, always putting others before herself. She was a giver, never a taker, and always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, 2015, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at St. Casimir Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
