INDEX

[N9212] Francis is described in three seperate birth records as:
1846 .... Colonus
1843 ... Organarius .....Musician
1840 ....Semi Colonus

the inquilinus / conolus worked a full sized farm of about 44 acres and was
self-sustaining. A colonus was a farmer who owned a leasehold (Colonat). Although he did
not own the land outright, the lease was inheritable and the farmer
treated the land more or less as his own. Once serfdom was abolished,
many farmers were given the opportunity to truly own the land.

the semi-inquilinus worked a half-sized farm and had to work for others to
sustain his family

the hortulanus worked a quarter sized farm and also had to supplement his
income in other ways

these three groups of serfs generally had their own thatched roof house,
outbuildings, vegetable gardens, tools and draught animals - all belonging
to the gentry to whom they were bound
