SOUTH BEND - Michael L. Szymczak, 73, died Sunday, May 13, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born November 20, 1944 in Mishawaka to the late Sylvester & Florence (Nowicki) Szymczak. Mike was also preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; daughter, Laurie (James) Thornton; and his sister, Rose (Pat) Perri. On September 4, 1965 in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Mike married Michelene (Litka) Szymczak. She survives along with their sons, David (Sheila) Szymczak and Patrick (Tracy) Szymczak; grandchildren, Nashley (Tyler) Grathen, Brianna, Luke & Arrianna Szymczak; great-grandchildren, Noah and Cooper Grathen; sisters, Margaret Heintz and Judy (Mel) Grzeskowiak; brother-in-law, Clem (Peggy) Litka, 20 nieces and nephews. Mike retired from the United States Postal Service after 47 years. He appreciated military history and was a member of the Ohio Valley Military Society. Mike was a parishioner of Holy Family and St. Adalbert Catholic Churches. He was a devout Catholic, a very caring man with a great sense of humor. Mike was an avid reader; he enjoyed walking, gardening, and being outdoors. Most of all he loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, following all their academic and sporting events. The family would like to thank Beacon Medical Group, the Infusion Center, and Memorial Hospital 10th Floor South. Visitation will be held 2:00pm to 6:00pm Thursday, May 17, 2018 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Rosary to be prayed at 2:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.
