[N30749] Marcus Samuel Gilbert
April 13, 1905 - February 6, 2006

Marcus Samuel Gilbert 100 years old, of Carmel passed away Monday, February 6, 2006. He was born April 13, 1905 in South Bend, IN. Mr. Gilbert was a 1925 graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While at Purdue he performed with the band and was a member of the first group of drummers on Purdue's Big Drum squad. He was recognized at the 80th anniversary celebration. Following his graduation from college, Mr. Gilbert worked for Westinghouse Corp. in Lynn, MA and then briefly sold securities. Unfortunately, the year was 1929 and the Great Depression interrupted his securities career. Always a confident, outgoing and witty person, Mr. Gilbert was able to survive the Great Depression by working odd jobs. He pumped gas, sold magazine subscriptions and fruit to get by. He was hired by Indianapolis Power and Light working his way into the Engineering Department where he worked on the design of street lights. During WW II he worked for Civil Aeronautical Agency and designed runway lights for airports. Later he returned to IPL and worked in the residential and commercial sale of electric heat pumps until he retired in 1970. He was an avid pianist and was a member of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck. Mr. Gilbert is survived by his loving family including his wife, Rose Mendelsohn Gilbert; his son, Dennis (Erika) Gilbert; his daughter, Elaine (Raymond) Bishop; his grandchildren, Eric, Ian Gilbert and Lev, Max Bishop; his great-grandchildren, Kayla, Justin and Brian; and his brothers, David and Robert Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his dear sister, Faye Ofstein. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Beth-El Zedeck North Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to: Aaron - Ruben - Nelson Mortuary.
