[N9574] Frank L. Kaniewski
Jan. 4, 1928 - Nov. 24, 2016
SOUTH BEND - Frank Kaniewski, 88, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away after a lengthy illness at Brookdale Assisted Living in Chandler, AZ. He was born on Jan. 4, 1928, in South Bend, to Frank H. and Charlotte (Jankowiak) Kaniewski, who preceded him in death along with his wife, Joan (Nowacki) of 55 years; and his sister, Alice (Miller). After graduating from South Bend Catholic High School in 1946 he worked at Oliver's and Studebaker Corp. in South Bend, before he joined the South Bend Fire Department in 1957, spending most of that time at Station 3, Ladder 5 and being known for his “Homemade Polish Sausage.” He retired as a captain after 28 years in 1985. Well-known as an excellent carpenter, he built his retirement home in MN on McDonald Lake to enjoy the next 25 years fishing, gardening, and watching his favorite sports teams, Notre Dame, Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs (and to see the joy on his face when they finally won the World Series this year). Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Frank is survived by his two daughters, Pamela (Joseph) Pluta of Chandler, AZ, and Sandra (Jesse) Martin of Sparks, NV; grandsons, Nicholas (Wendy) Martin of Singapore and Ryan (Chalsey) Martin of Glendale, AZ; great-grandchildren, Tana and Andrew of Singapore, and Harper and Holden of Glendale, AZ. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016, in the chapel of the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Visitation will be held one hour before services. A private entombment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to either the National Kidney Foundation of AZ, 360 E. Coronado Rd., #180, Phoenix, AZ (www.azkidney.org); or Hospice of the West, 21410 N. 19th Ave., Suite 100, Phoenix, AZ 85027 (www.HospiceWestAZ.com).
