SOUTH BEND -Genevieve (Neland) Varga of South Bend, IN, died peacefully at Caring Junction in South Bend on Sunday morning, October 14, 2012. Genevieve was born October 15, 1916, in South Bend, to Amadee Neland and Marie (Claeys) Neland. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Martha Odusch; a half sister, Helen (DeLee) DeBaets; and a brother, Julius Neland, who was named after his second cousin, Father Julius Nieuwland, C.S.C. After graduating from Central High School, she married George G. Varga on May 17, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church in South Bend. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1990. Together they had three children, James G. (Claudia) Varga of South Bend, Janet (Charles) Berry of Silver Spring, MD, and Joellen Varga (Thomas Arden) of Wilmette, IL. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Brendan Berry, Anna Varga, Sam Varga, Emma Arden and Carolyn Arden, as well as her newborn great-grandson, James Liam Berry, and a sister, Alice (Hesler) Miller of Henderson, TX. Genevieve had worked part-time at the Natatorium in South Bend from 1952-1954, and for Kaiser-Jeep and AM General from 1963-1978. She was very active in church organizations at Sacred Heart, Corpus Christi and Our Lady of Hungary parishes. She served as president of the Altar and Rosary Society and the local chapter of the National Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Padre Pio Prayer Group as well as the Shepherds Club. As a longtime resident of LaPorte Avenue, she served as secretary of the West Side Neighborhood Association, and was active in programs at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She cared for both the old and young and was known for her gentle, loving kindness, and her devotion to her family and friends. Wednesday, October 17th, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, with the Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., also at the church. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka, is in charge of arrangements.
