Carl R. Berta, 70, residing in South Bend, passed away at 6:10 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2009 at Hospice House, Elkhart. He was born March 26, 1939 in South Bend, the son of Charles V. & Mary B. (Hegedus) Berta, and had remained a lifelong resident of South Bend. On July 11, 1959 in South Bend, Carl was united in marriage to Sheila R. Berzai. He is survived by his loving wife Sheila of fifty years. Also surviving are two daughters, Lori (Mick) Cobb of Carmel, IN, and Kim (Charles) Hill of Mishawaka, IN. Six grandchildren, Nicole Waldron of South Bend, Jaclyn Waldron, Charles Hill, Jr., Abby Hill all of Mishawaka, Haley Cobb and Mickey Cobb, both of Carmel, survive him as well. He is also survived by hismother,MaryB.BertaofSouthBend andhis sister, Doris (Thomas) Salata of Nocona, TX. Mr. Berta graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend. He was employed as a mechanic for Gurley Leep Automotive Group and retired following thirty-three years of service. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, loved to fly, played the piano, and at one time played the upright Bass in a band. He also enjoyed playing golf. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 5, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, where a parish rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mr. Berta may be offered to the National Kidney Foundation, 911 East 86th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
