Pair charged in running illegal gambling operation in South Bend
July 28, 2012|DAVE STEPHENS | South Bend Tribune

SOUTH BEND -- Seven months after the Indiana Gaming Commission raided several area businesses, two men have been charged with running an illegal gambling operation that took bets on college and professional football games. According to charges filed Friday, 68-year-old Zbignew "Ziggy" Kryszczuk and 79-year-old Guiseppe Romeo, both of South Bend, are accused of operating a parlay betting operation that took as many as 2,700 illegal bets per week. South Bend businesses allegedly involved in the betting operation include Frank's Place bar, Frank's liquor store and Main Event Unisex Salon. The Pirate's Cove bar in Mishawaka and Dealmaker's Auto Sales in Clay Township are also alleged to have offered the cards. According to investigators with the Indiana Gaming Commission -- which began investigating the operation in 2009 -- Romeo and Kryszczuk are accused of running a parlay betting scheme, where individuals could fill out a weekly card to bet on both college and professional football games.Investigators say the pair created and printed 3,000 cards per week during the football season. Then they allegedly distributed the cards -- which included the names of teams, odds and lines -- to area businesses, where patrons would bet between $1 and $5 per card. Gaming investigators reported placing multiple bets on the parlay cards, betting up to $10 on cards at Frank's Place Liquor Store, on Hickory Road, over a three-month period, occasionally resulting in winning cash. Acceding to the charging affidavit, Romeo, when questioned by investigators, said that each business handling the cards would receive 20 percent of the total money bet with them each week. He also allegedly said that between 2,500 and 2,700 cards were bet on each week. During a search warrant raid in December 2011 -- in which investigators searched several of the involved business -- stacks of odds sheets, betting slips and parlay cards were allegedly found in Romeo's home and at Kryszczuk's business, Dealmaker's Auto Sales. Both Kryszczuk and Romeo have been charged with professional gambling, a Class D felony. On Friday afternoon, officers at the St. Joseph County Jail reported that Kryszczuk had turned himself in about 4 p.m., but that Romeo had not yet been booked into the jail. Bond for both men was set at $500.

Judge chastises 67-year-old for gambling operation
October 31, 2012|By DAVE STEPHENS - Follow me

SOUTH BEND -- After 67 years as an upstanding citizen and solid businessman, Zbignew "Ziggy" Kryszczuk stood in court Wednesday and admitted nothing in his life has led to more shame than being caught running an illegal football gambling operation. How ashamed is he? Since investigators began raiding local bars -- including Frank's Place in South Bend and the Pirates Cove in Mishawaka -- last January, and even following his arrest this past July, Kryszczuk has refused to mention any part of his crime, even the fact that he was arrested, to his wife of 45 years, who is battling cancer. "Did you ever think, while you were doing this, what it would do to her if you got caught," asked St. Joseph County Superior Court Judge Jerome Frese. "I can't," Kryszczuk said. "She couldn't handle it." So instead, on Wednesday, Kryszczuk -- who plead guilty last week -- stood alone in court as Frese prepared to sentence him for his involvement in the scheme that distributed parlay gambling cards to local bars, where patrons bet up to $10 on college and professional football games."Frankly, I think this was a case of petty greed to make some money in an easy way," Frese told Kryszczuk. "It was just stupid. And against the law." Kryszczuk told Frese he was ashamed to have become involved in the operation and that, at his age, he should have known better. But he didn't provide much detail into how big the operation was, only saying that he and his partners didn't make much money. "You probably didn't make enough to pay your lawyer here," Frese quipped. "That's absolutely true," Kryszczuk said. Because of the mitigating factors in the case -- Krysczuk's lack of a criminal history, his age, and his poor health -- Frese said it was inappropriate to send the man to prison for his crime. Instead, after finding him guilty of a Class A misdemeanor, Frese sentenced Kryszczuk to a year or probation. "But if you screw this up," Frese warned, "I will send you to jail for one year." Kryszczuk told Frese that he needn't worry, as he'd never do anything to require a court appearance again. "I hope so," Frese said, then told Kryszczuk that he also needed to go home to his wife. "You need to go home," Frese said, "and prove to your wife that you are the good guy she married, who made a very stupid decision." Staff writer Dave Stephens:
