SOUTH BEND - Eugene F. Downhour, 71, of South Bend, passed away at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, in his residence after an extended illness. Gene was born on November 5, 1935, in Mishawaka, IN, and resided in the Michiana area his lifetime. On April 21, 1962, in South Bend, he married the former Elsie M. Bielski, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Anita M. (Howard) Davis and Katrina G. Sinclair, both of South Bend; two sons, Kirk E. Downhour and Kent E. Downhour, both of South Bend; a sister, Mary M. Anderson of South Bend; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren whom he loved and cherished. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd H. Downhour on April 2, 1997, and Nellie M. (Lusher) Downhour on Feb. 13, 2005; a brother, Thomas H. Downhour in 1945; and a granddaughter, Brianna Rose Downhour in 2000. Gene was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved his family deeply and always tried to help others in a time of need. He will be sadly missed by a loving family, his church family, and all who had the opportunity to meet him during his life journey. Gene was an avid sports fan, all sports, and was a lover of model trains. Mr. Downhour was a member of Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, Greene Twp. Lions Club (charter member) Past District Governor Lions Club International, received the Melvin Jones Award and was Lion of the Year in 1981. He was very active in the church, serving on several committees within the church, and served the Lord well. Gene retired in 1992 from Bendix Corp. (Allied Signal) after many years of service. He was time-study engineer with the Bendix Corp. in South Bend. Gene was a graduate of Riley High School, class of 1953, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was proud of his military service. Visitation hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Hanley and Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. in Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church. Friends may call one hour prior to service time in the church. Pastor Jan Dimick will officiate and burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. The North Liberty VFW Post 1954 will conduct military services at the gravesite. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, to the Greene Twp. Lions Club, or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.
