Alice May Toth
July 12, 1929 - March 22, 2014
MISHAWAKA - Alice May Toth (Baldwin) died peacefully after a brief illness on March 22, 2014, at "The Avenue of Medina" nursing care facility in Medina, OH, where she spent the last nine months of her life near her son David, his wife Laura and their children. She was born July 12, 1929, in Mishawaka, IN, to Charles and Clara (Robison) Baldwin. She was a 1947 graduate of Mishawaka High School. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Louie; son, Michael; grandson, Colin Derian-Toth; and brothers, Richard and Larry Baldwin. Surviving are sons, Dan (Janice Derian) of Plymouth, MI, Paul (Patricia Muyskens) of Bloomington, IN, and David (Laura Toth) of Brunswick, OH; her many loving grandchildren, Rachel Allanson (Ted Allanson), Alexandra Derian-Toth, Meredith Derian-Toth, Casey Muyskens-Toth, Madison Derian-Toth, Garret Derian-Toth, Noah Toth, Paige Toth; great-grand-children, Lyla and August Allanson; and many nieces and nephews. Alice worked many years at St. Mary Hospital in Livonia, MI. Livonia was her home for nearly 50 years. At St. Mary she worked as an administrative assistant first in the emergency room and later in human resources. She retired from St. Mary Hospital. Alice's primary identity was being grandma. Even children in her neighborhood called her "grandma Alice". She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and lived to take part in their lives and hear of their successes and exploits. She enjoyed directing "Camp Grandma" for many summers where she taught the children arts and crafts projects, took them to movies, and cooked their favorite meals. Alice loved china painting and craft projects, attending Detroit Symphony concerts with her neighbors and friends, yard work and cooking. One would think she was born Hungarian and not just married to one due to all of the wonderful Hungarian dishes she created: goulash, paprikas, palacsint, plum dumplings, kolache and so much more. Alice will be greatly missed. She was a fun and feisty woman and was a joy to spend time with. She was a good neighbor and friend. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We really don't know what we will do without her. Probably cook Hungarian food and drink a martini or two - this will bring her right back. There will be a grave-side service in Mishawaka, IN, at Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, March 29, at 3:30 pm. Memorial gifts may be made to Children's Hospital of Detroit or the American Diabetes Association . Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Paul Toth, 715 N. Plymouth, Bloomington, IN, 47408. Or, electronically to ptoth1956@live.com. Published in South Bend Tribune on Mar. 26, 2014
