SOUTH BEND - Carol Jean (Slaby) Friend, 54, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, in her home after an illness. Born on February 6, 1953, in St. Joseph Hospital, the daughter of Alex and Jane Slaby. She had lived her whole life in South Bend. Carol graduated from Washington High School and had a career as a nurse's aide working many years at Carlisle Nursing Home. She was most recently employed with Comfort Suites. Carol was a loving mother of four children and grandmother of two. She was known for her cooking and baking of her mother's Polish recipes. Her homemade pierogies were delicious and she passed her mother's recipe on to her daughter. Her family will miss her cooking and her sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her father, Alex Slaby, brother, Aloysius Slaby and sister, Patricia Luberts. On September 1, 1990, Carol married Larry Friend who survives. Surviving with her loving husband are her children, Brian Slaby (Jennifer Daugherty), Aaron, Sarah and Ben Friend; grandchildren, Kendall and Evan Slaby; her brothers, Vince (Helen) Slaby of New Carlisle, David (Darlene) Slaby of Chattanooga, TN; sisters, Mary Jane Tekip of Port Charlotte, FL, Rose (Richard) Coverdill of Enfield, CT, Stella (Eugene) Chlebowski of South Bend, Wanda (William) Bain of Schaumburg, IL; sister-in-law Sue Slaby; godmother Gerrie Bukowski; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, 27, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where friends may visit two hours prior to services. Cremation will take place.
