MISHAWAKA - Zano Vannoni, 89, passed away surrounded by his family at home on Friday, January 29, 2016. Zano was born on December 22, 1926, in Mishawaka, as the son of Gino and Anita (Birocci) Vannoni. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Alfred “Speedy” Vannoni, and one sister, Clora Smiley. On April 25, 1953, in La Porte, IN, he married the former Loretta Gherardi. Surviving are his wife of sixty-two years, Loretta; two daughters, Diana (Bill) Walters of Mishawaka and Tina (Stephen) Freeman of Carmel, IN; one son, Dino (Jason) Vannoni of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren, Katherine (Don) Zimmerman, Justin (Lindsey) Walters, Jace (Regan) Freeman, Ross (Karli) Freeman, Zane Freeman and Macy Freeman; and four great-grandchildren. After graduating from Mishawaka High School he served in WW II in Germany during the Nuremburg Trials. He graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1952. He became director of City Planning for Mishawaka, then went on to work for City Planning Assoc., an urban planning company for cities in the Midwest. In 1979 he was asked to start the first building trades course at Mishawaka High School, completing 12 houses before he retired in 1992. After building 8 houses on the same cul-de-sac in the Reverewood subdivision, he was given the Key to the City by the then Mayor Buetter and the street was named Vannoni Place. He provided longtime service to the Mishawaka Housing Authority as Board member and as the Board Chairman for many years. In 2013 he was honored by the housing authority by naming the assisted living facility within River View 500 as the “Vannoni Living Center.”Zano was very active in the De'Amici Club in Mishawaka, the Mishawaka Building Trades and the Mishawaka Housing Authority.The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Heartland Hospice and Help at Home for all the tender loving care that they gave Zano and the many hugs to Loretta during this difficult time. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 4th, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, with a Remembrance service to be held at 4:30 pm.
