SOUTH BEND - George A. Pinckert, 82, of South Bend died Sunday, November 24, 2013 in West Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness. Mr. Pinckert was born January 22, 1931 in South Bend to the late Laura E. (Hempstead) and Albert R. Pinckert and was a lifetime area resident. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Pinckert. He is survived by his sister, Alice Shriver (Glen) of Rochester, IN; brothers, Merlin E. Pinckert of South Bend and Roy E. "Butch" Pinckert (Harriet) of Teegarden, IN, and many cousins. George was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, South Bend. After briefly being employed by the Studebaker Corp., he became an accountant with Goodwill. In high school he was a track star and for many years held the record for the number of laps run, which equated to 13 miles. His good friend Jim Reinbold, of Clay High School and South Bend Silver Hawks fame, and he started a sandlot baseball league on the west side of town. George liked good old country music and was a huge fan of the University of Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and a longtime member of West Side Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, November 26th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Pastor Nathan Prong of West Side United Church of Christ officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in Olive Chapel Cemetery, New Carlisle. Family and friends may call today from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
