LaVerne “Verne” M. Barczykowski, 90, of Niles, Michigan formerly of South Bend, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023. She was born on February 4, 1933 in New Carlisle, Indiana to the late Anthony and Agnes (Petitjean) Spitz. On May 11, 1957 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church she married Eugene J. Barczykowski who preceded her in death on June 4, 1995. Verne was also preceded in death by two sisters, Harriette Miller and Lorrene Nemeth, one brother, Clarence Spitz. She is survived by three daughters, Cindy (David) Truax of South Bend, Indiana, Sandy (Clay) Flanagan of Niles, Michigan, Sue (Greg) Woodard of Pittsboro, Indiana, seven grandchildren, Lauren (Matthew) VanZant, Collin (Elayna) Truax, Caitlyn Truax, Joshua Flanagan, Brianne Flanagan, Allison Woodard and Aidan Woodard, one sister, Margaret (Jerry) Gloster of South Bend, Indiana, one brother, Andrew Spitz of South Bend, Indiana, six great grandchildren, Liam Truax, Audrey VanZant, Lakelyn Truax, Dylan VanZant, Logan Truax and Ryder Truax. Verne was a hardworking, and she was independent until the last years of her life. The family would like to give special thanks to her daughter Sandy and her husband Clay for giving her a loving home for the last three years of her life. She was especially proud of having worked at Associates when she was younger. In her younger years she enjoyed polka dancing with her husband. She was an avid Euchre player. Verne enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and the Masked Singer. In the last few years she enjoyed spending time at the casino. Every Easter she was known for her lamb cakes that she would bake and decorate for family, friends and neighbors. Verne was a loving caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and took great pride in her family. She always put everyone else first. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday March 9, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 309 S. Taylor St. South Bend, IN. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Verne’s honor.
