SSG. Carl B. “Sarge” VanDurmen Sr., 63, formally of South Bend, IN passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, in Scottsville, KY. Carl was born in Grand Rapids, MI to Geoffrey and Shirley VanDurmen. He is survived by his mother, Shirley; children, Carl VanDurmen Jr., Jennifer Calloway, Jeffrey VanDurmen, Timo VanDurmen, and Amanda VanDurmen; stepson, Richard Solloway; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchild; sisters, Karla Sepanek, Dixie Shaffer, Lisa (Phil) Knight and Sabrina VanDurmen; brothers, Robert (Julie) VanDurmen, Anthony VanDurmen and David (Shelly) Duncan; and aunt, Susan VanDurmen. Carl proudly served in the United States Army from 1976-1994. As a highly decorated veteran, he was a passionate and devoted member of the American Legion Post 284, Patriot Guard Riders, VFW Post 10733, American Legion (Riders) Post 293, VFW National Home for Children, Disabled American Veterans, Clay Democratic Club, and Spine and Joint Associates. When Carl was not honoring his country through one of the above-mentioned organizations, he spent his time enjoying breakfast at Huddle House, riding his motorcycle, exploring the outdoors, traveling, and surrounding himself with friends and family. “On the Seventh Day God rested, but the scouts pressed on. Please take care of yourself and each other. I love you all to infinity and beyond. ‘Remember, failure is not an option.’ I will be at my post watching over you.” The family will receive friends from 11 am-1 pm on Friday December 16, 2022, at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544 with a funeral service to begin at 1 pm. Carl will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, IN with military rites conducted by the American Legion 161 and VFW 360 burial squad.
