Birth: Feb. 4, 1881
German Poland
Death: Dec. 14, 1933
Chicago, Cook County, IL
Valeria Nowaczewski's father, Valentine, died in 1889. Her mother, Marianna, married Henry E. Schultz in 1890. According to the 1900 census of South Bend, Indiana, the household of Henry and Mary Schultz included their son George; her parents, John and Mary "Lagozinski"; and four of her seven living children: daughter Frances, and sons John, Peter, and Frank "Novaszewski". From church marriage records, two other children of Valentine and Marianna can be identified: Valeria and Helen Nowaczewski.
On August 22, 1905, Rev. Val Czyzewski, C. S. C., pastor of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in South Bend, married Valeria Nowaczewski and Boleslaw John Chrzanowski. The church marriage record lists Valentine and Mary (Lagodzinski) Nowaczewski as her parents. On the marriage applications they filed with the county, the clerk entered her name as Woldie Nowaczewski, and the priest entered her name as Valeria Nowaczewski on the return. She, a milliner, was listed as born Feb. 4, 1881 in Germany. Boleslaw, a pharmacist living in Chicago, Illinois, was listed as born Apr. 12, 1882 in Germany.
The South Bend address listed as Valeria's residence on the marriage application was the same address listed in the South Bend city directory at that time as the residence of Pelagia Woelfel, a millinery merchant. The 1900 census record of South Bend, indicates that the household of Pelagia Woelfel included four children all listed as adopted daughters with the last name of Woelfel. Two of them were Valeria and Helen who were of the right age and places of birth to be the daughters of Valentine and Mary Nowaczewski. (The census taker may have had the wrong impression about the relationship as no official adoptions by a Pelagia Woelfel were found in the county's adoption record indexes.)
Valeria and Boleslaw Chrzanowski moved to Detroit, Michigan. "Barney" Chrzanowski, a pharmacist, 36, listed as born April 18, 1882, registered for the World War I draft there. For the person to be contacted, was listed as Mrs.
Woldie Chrzanowski at the same address as his, 1152 Chene Street.
In 1916, the South Bend News-Times published an account of the marriage of Pelagia Woelfel. It reported, "The attendants were Mrs. Valeria Chrzanowski of Detroit and Michael Hazinski."
According to the 1920 census of Detroit, the household of Boleslaw "Chrzanniski", a pharmacist, born in German Poland, residing at 1152 Chene Street (the same address as listed in the WWI draft registration), included his
wife Valeria, born in German Poland, and their daughter, Casimierz, 13, born in Indiana.
"Valerina" Chrzanowski, 50, married daughter of Valentine Nowaczewski, died Dec. 14, 1933, and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery. (Interment records of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, South Bend)
If the gravestone inscribed, "Walerya Chanowski" is hers, then two years later, in 1935, her sister, Frances Nowaczewski Treely was buried two spaces away in the same lot, and in 1942, Pelagia Woelfel was buried next to "Walerya".
An obituary for Mrs. Barney Chrzanowski, 50, of Chicago, was published in the South Bend Tribune on Dec. 15, 1933. (No Cook Co., Illinois, death record was located for her.) Her survivors included her husband, a daughter Catherine, a brother Frank Nowaczewski, and a sister Mrs. V. K. Kaniewski [Helen]. Rev. S. A. Gruza, C. S. C., pastor at St. Hedwige's Catholic Church was to officiate and the interment was to be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
