SOUTH BEND - Irene B. Gumkowski, 83, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday April 4, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born on April 5, 1931, in LaPorte, IN, to the late Joseph and Belvina (Mish) Cichon. She moved to South Bend in 1950, coming from LaPorte, and on June 17, 1950, as Irene B. Cichon, she married Bert A. Gumkowski, who survives. Also surviving are her sons, Michael R. (Ann) of Lake Zurich, IL, David A. (Charlene) of Doylestown, PA and John J. (Sherry) of Granger; six grandchildren, Kristin (Lann, III) Tarrant and Matthew (Jacquelyn) Gumkowski, Dr. Alyssa (Brandon) Bernard, James Gumkowski, Amanda and Dan (Becca) Sibilla; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Ava, and Abigail Gumkowski, Lann, IV and Rylan Tarrant and Brenna Sibilla; and by a sister, Dorothy Kozlowski of Gahanna, OH. Mrs. Gumkowski worked as administrator for South Bend Convalescent Center and retired from Standard Federal Bank, where she worked in the Home Appraisal Dept. She was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, South Bend, where she was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society and a member of PNA #83, South Bend. She loved doing ceramics. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Wednesday April 8, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Church, with entombment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday April 7, 2015, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 pm.
