LAKEVILLE - Sam W. Kalafat, 63, of Lakeville, IN, passed away at 7:17 a.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006, in Hospice House, South Bend, after an extended illness. He was born on March 5, 1943, in South Bend, IN, to James G. and Bertha (Caparell) Kalafat. Sam is survived by his longtime companion with whom he made his home, Lova Medich of Lakeville; his father, James G. Kalafat of South Bend, IN; a daughter, Bertie (Scott) Perry of Bradenton, FL; a son, James (Leslie) Kalafat of Lakeville, IN; four grandchildren, Brittany Kalafat, Nicholas Perry, Nathaniel Perry and Paris Kalafat; a brother, George (Peggy) Kalafat of South Bend, IN; two aunts, Irene Sadural of South Bend, IN, and Millie Morris of Mishawaka, IN; one niece, Mary Kalafat of South Bend; and numerous cousins. Sam was a lifelong area resident. He attended South Bend Central and Lakeville High Schools, earning his GED while in the service. Sam was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam. Sam retired in 1996 after eight years of service at Lock Joint Tube. He also was an avid hunter and fisherman. A private service will be held on Wednesday in the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville, IN. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Contributions in memory of Sam W. Kalafat may be made to the family c/o of the Palmer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 33, Lakeville, IN, for a special memorial fund.
