MISHAWAKA - Frank J. Firtl, 95, passed away at 10:12 pm Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Frank was born on March 17, 1917, in South Bend, to Frank and Mary (Buzolich) Firtl. He was employed by South Bend Roofing, Sibley's Machine Shop and worked 27 1/2 years at Bendix Brake and Steering where he was a member of Union Local 9. Since 1947, Frank was also a member of Holy Cross Catholic Parish. Frank was a World War II Army veteran. He was upgraded five rankings to Technical Sergeant, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Certificate of Merit while serving in the European Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge; Volunteer Mission into Houffalize Belgium. He was wounded by a land mine in Brachelen, Germany. Frank was also the president of the Civil War Round Table, South Bend Chapter. His hobbies included bowling, where he was a member of Bowlers Country Club, the original logo being of his own design. He enjoyed golfing with his brothers into their 80s, fishing, and story telling. On November 29, 1941, he married the former Maryrose Kay Aufschlager. She died on June 12, 1990. Frank was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Firtl, and a brother, Matthew Firtl. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ganser Grenert and her husband, George of Mishawaka; two sons, Thomas (Janis) Firtl of South Bend and John (Suellen) Firtl of Granger; 6 grandchildren R.C. Ganser, Eric Ganser, David Ganser, Jennifer Lanchsweerdt, Sarah Firtl and Alex Firtl; 4 step-grandchildren, Geoff Grenert, Todd Grenert, Kelly Grunawalt and Todd Carroll; 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a brother, Emil Firtl of South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, January 12, 2013, in Holy Cross Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
