William H. HOPPE (Wilhelm Heinrich Hoppe). He was born in 1838 in Leun, Germany about 10-15 kilometers west of Giessen on the banks of the Lahn River just west of Wetzlar. He died in 1909 in Whiting, IN.

He immigrated in 1866 or 1867 to Erie, PA. Several Hoppes who appear to be relatives were in Erie with him and attended the same church: Peter (possibly a younger brother), Heinrich (may be a brother or cousin because he lived in Braunfels, just several kilometers down the road from Leun) and an unnamed woman (possibly Sophie) who seems to be a sister.

On January 14, 1868 William married Katherine GROSS (Katerina Gross) who was born in 1843 in Germany to parents Conrad and Katherine Gross. (She died in 1918 in Whiting, IN). They lived in Erie, PA from 1868 until about 1880 and had six of their seven children in Erie, PA:

Charles W., b. 1871? - He was living in Safety Harbor, FL
in 1924.
Ida Katherine, b. 1872
Amelia A., b. 1875
Oscar C., b. 1879 - He was living in Milwaukie, WI in 1924.

About 1880 William and Katherine moved to La Porte Co., Indiana. In 1887 their last child, Julius Albert, was born in Hana, La Porte Co., IN. The family then moved a few miles west to Whiting, Lake County, IN. Julius married Alma VATER (b. 1893 Whiting, IN, d. 1957 Whiting, IN) about 1918.

Ida and Amelia never married and died in Indiana. The other siblings moved to Milwaukie, Florida, Illinois and who knows where. I would like to connect with descendants of Peter, Heinrich, Carl, Fredrick (Fred), Charles, and Oscar and trade family information.
