Helen Teresa Papandria
Dec. 26, 1920 - Sept. 30, 2009
MISHAWAKA - Helen Teresa Papandria, 88, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, September 30, in her apartment. Helen was born on December 26, 1920, in South Bend, to Nicholas and Irene (Taller) Molnar, who preceded her in death along with two brothers, Joseph and Andrew. Her husband of 64 years, Rocco Papandria, also preceded her in death. Helen is survived by her four children: daughters, Rebecca (Daniel) Reasor, Annette (Kevin) Klingel, both of South Bend, Sheryl (Daniel) Covey of Vandalia, MI; and a son, Rocco (Dianne) Papandria Jr. of Lakeville. Also surviving are grandchildren, Renee (John) Bulger, Gina Klingel, Chris (Taryn) Papandria and Nick (Maria) Papandria, and seven great-grandchildren. Helen grew up on the west side of town and was employed at Studebaker. On January 10, 1942, she married her late husband, Rocky, at Our Lady of Hungary Church. In 1947 they purchased the "Corner Café" on Lincoln Way and Sample Street in South Bend, and continued to expand the business from a tavern to a well-known restaurant. Several years later they changed the name to Rocky's Restaurant and Lounge where they and their children served many customers in South Bend and surrounding areas until their retirement in 1978. In Helen's younger years she loved working in her yard and took great pride in her property. She also enjoyed entertaining and cooking great meals for friends and family. She spent the last year and a half living at Tanglewood Trace, an assisted living facility. There she was able to meet a lot of new friends and enjoy many activities and social functions. She kept everyone amused there by playing her pranks and telling her little jokes. She always commented on how special they treated her and what great care they provided. For that the family would like to extend their grateful appreciation. There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial of her ashes will follow at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
