From the SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE, September 22, 1945:

John W. Tompkins, age 46 of RR#2, Box 250, South Bend died Wednesday in Memorial (Epworth) Hospital after an illness of two weeks. Born in Lithuania, July 23, 1899, he came to South Bend from that country 45 years ago. On May 22, 1923, he was married in St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church at Terre Coupee, this county, by Rev. Michael Swiatkowski, to Miss Josephine Wroblewski, who survives. Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tompkins of South Bend; four children, Richard, Dolores and John, Jr. all at home, and Seaman 2/c Irvin in the Pacific; two sisters, Mrs Mary Michalski and Miss Sally Tompkins, both of South Bend; four brothers, Andrew and Frank Tompkins of South Bend; and Sgt. Bert Tompkins, in France and Signalman Walter Tompkins, in the Pacific.
