SOUTH BEND - Margaret King, 88, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2010, in her residence. Margaret was born September 24, 1922, in South Bend, as the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Celmer) Gruber. On February 19, 1948, in South Bend, as Margaret Gruber, she married Thomas King, who preceded her in death on November 24, 1965. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Albert. Margaret is survived by five children, Pam (John) Kelb of East China, MI, Michael (Jeannie) King, Dennis King, David King, all of South Bend, Thomas King of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Tracey, Kallie, Josh, Tammy, Mary, David II, Heather and Paula, wife of David II, who was his caregiver; and 14 great-grandchildren. Margaret was a 1946 graduate of St. Mary's College school of nursing; she also received degrees from Indiana School of nursing in 1966, with post-graduate degrees from Indiana University South Bend. Margaret was Chart Nursing and Medical Surgery Coordinator from 1966 to 1974 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. From 1974 to 1983, she was the director of nursing. From 1983 to 1989, she was a Discharge Planning Specialist in St. Joseph Hospital, Mishawaka, retiring in 1989. Margaret was very active throughout he life. She was a past president of the Arthritis Society, Mishawaka; served the American Cancer Society; Northern Indiana Society of Nursing Service Administrators; Mishawaka Business and Professional Women's Club; St. Matthews' Rosary Society; Indiana University Alumni Association; St. Mary's College Alumni Association; St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary; and a volunteer along with being a Eucharistic Minister at St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend. Margaret's life was inspired by faith and service. Family and friends may call on Tuesday, November 9th, from 5 - 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, and from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, November 10, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend, with Msgr. Michael Heintz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. The family request that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Bishop Crowley Fund at St. Matthew's School, South Bend.
