====================
South Bend Daily Times, Sat., Feb. 27, 1909, p. 1:
“Joseph Raczynski, sr., who was near 103 years old, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Julia Nowak, 1219 West Sample street, after a three days’ illness. Just before dissolution, Mr. Raczynski fell into a peaceful slumber from which he never wakened.
“There is no question but that the age is correct, as the family have records which show the deceased to have been born in Plock, Pozan, June 14, 1806, where he lived until he reached the age of twenty years at which time he went to Culm, West Prussia. “For more than a half century he remained in Prussia, being engaged in the grocery business, from which he retired about twenty years ago to come to this country. He first located in Chicago, living there until eight years ago, when he came to South Bend.
“Father of Well Known Priest
“The deceased was the father of the late Rev. Father Eligious Raczynski whose death occurred in this city about seven years ago. Rev. Raczynski had charge of the St. Casimier parish and his death was a great blow to the aged father and also caused profound sorrow to his parishioners.
“The death of his wife nine months ago, at the age of 69 years, was another deeply felt sorrow to the aged man, and he has been less active in his habits since that time. She was much younger than he, but they lived together 43 years at her death, and was his second wife, the first having died in Prussia. A son, Anthony Raczynski, by the first marriage is now living in Chicago and is nearly 70 years old. r. Raczynski is survived by Mrs. Nowak and the following children: Joseph Raczynski, jr., of this city, but who is now at Denver, Col., for the benefit of his health, and Mrs. Bernhard Pozrski and Alexander Raczynski, both of Chicago. There are 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
“Believed in Regular Habits
“Mr. Raczynski followed a life of regular habits, especially so since his 80th year, at which time he excercised great care in his habits. He was not addicted to the use of tobacco, and while not a total abstainer, never used liquor to excess. It was his habit to drink a small glass of whisky for medicinal purposes each morning upon arising, but never used it at any other time. This practice had been kept up for the past 23 years. He would usually retire between 10 and 11 o’clock and would arise promptly at six o’clock the next morning.
“Even until a few weeks go he would attend early mass each morning, after which he would return to his home for breakfast. This concluded, he would start out for a walk and some days would walk two or three miles. He was very fond of the city parks and would frequently go there as a matter of recreation. Before the death of his son, Rev. Raczynski, he took pleasure in walking with him, and the two would stroll over the city, and it was very frequent that the father would tire the son out in their walks.
“Was Careful of Diet
“He was very particular about the things he ate and always insisted in being punctual in the serving of his meals. He was also careful about what he would eat, although he had no regular list of foods from which to select his meals. “Even in death his appearance is that of a much younger man than his age would indicate, and he was well preserved. He wore a full beard and mustache which, as was his hair, were snow white. “Several priests from Chicago will attend the services which will be held Monday morning from the St. Casimier church. The services will be conducted by Rev. Father A. Zubowicz, who succeeded the son of the deceased, and who will be assisted in saying mass by the visiting priests, whose visits are in respect to the memory of the late Rev. Father Raczynski. The interment will follow in the Cedar Grove cemetery.”
