Walter Szostakowski Sr.
SOUTH BEND - Walter S. Szostakowski Sr., 93, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, in Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Walter was born February 14, 1916, in Lowell, Massachusetts, the second child of Wadyslva and Antonia Szostakowski. When he was 5-years-old his family returned to their native country, Warsaw, Poland, where he was raised and lived until the age of 19 when he returned to the States. A few years later he met his wife, Josephine, and together they raised five children. He retired from the former Bendix Corporation on February 1, 1981, after 25 years and one month of service. On April 20, 1940, Walter married Josephine Szymanski, who preceded him in death on May 10, 2003. Surviving are daughters, Victoria A. (Howard) McMahon of Capron, Illinois, Helen S. Halfen of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Wanda Figueroa of South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Szostakowski of South Bend; and a son, Walter S. "Sonny" (Pat) Szostakowski Jr. of South Bend. A son, Charles Szostakowski, preceded him in death. Also surviving are grandchildren, Charles (Mary) McMahon, Christopher (Kim) McMahon, Jason Halfen, Nicolas Halfen, Michael (Angela) Railing, Rhonda Diaz, Rodney Figueroa, Samantha (Gene Yee) Figueroa; and great-grandchildren, Justin McMahon, Kasandra McMahon, Falisha McMahon, Edwin Diaz II, Jonathan Walter Diaz, Morgan Josephine Diaz and Thalia Figueroa-Yee; and a special friend, Finnegan. Walter was a member of St. Mary National Catholic Church, South Bend. At the age of 31 he joined and became a 32nd degree Mason of the Ancient York Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was a member of that Lodge for 62 years, making him the oldest living member. He was also a member of the Consistory and Lodge Council Chapter of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Boston and the Valley of Lowell, a member of the Avalon in South Bend, Past Chairman of the Local 9 UAW area 1 Retirees, a member of the local UAWs 3 & 5, a member of the Square Compass Club of Bendix, and the UAW Retirees Gold Card member. Walter was a hard-working, loving husband and father who was very proud of his family. Upon retiring he and Josephine enjoyed traveling and making new friends. Several months previously he met his special friend, Finnegan, who is missing him desperately. Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2009, from 2-8 p.m. in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Funeral services Friday, May 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary National Catholic Church, South Bend, with burial to follow at All Saints Cathedral Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.
