Angelo Dominic Oliva
July 20, 1927 - Sept. 1, 2018
MISHAWAKA, IN - Angelo Dominic Oliva, born July 20, 1927 in Plati, Italy, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving family at his side. Although Angelo struggled to remember his friends and family, they recall all the wonderful, generous, and selfless acts which were his norm. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Maria (Zappia) Oliva. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Frances (Vergara) Oliva; and his siblings, Anthony (Katherine) Oliva, Rosemary (Marq) Anderson, and Betty (John) Neidhart. Grateful for the amazing gift of his fatherhood are his children, Michael Angelo Oliva and Maria Christina (Robby) Dennis. Angelo's grandchildren, Michael Edward Oliva and Christian, Grace, and Gabriele Dennis will miss him terribly, as he always had a way of making them laugh, even in the later stages of dementia. Too numerous to mention are the many nieces and nephews and even more grand- and great-nieces and nephews, both in the States and in Italy -- such an outpouring of love and respect coming as they share their stories of Uncle Angie. Angelo began his journey to the U.S. at age 9. He attended Battell School while the family lived across the street on the corner of Sarah and Battell. He went on to Mishawaka High School and then to IU for pre-med but used the bachelor of science degree he earned there to go on to complete a pharmacy degree at Butler University. He began his pharmacy career with one pharmacy which expanded to two locations with the help of his brother Tony. After meeting Frances, while visiting family in Italy, he returned to marry her and brought her to Mishawaka. He spent the majority of his career as a hospital pharmacist at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, with some moonlighting in retail. Angelo loved trying new things and often took classes at the Forever Learning Center. He studied photography, wood carving, and even his own native language. He loved to play golf once he retired and he played often. Traveling was another passion which fueled his love of history, while enabling him to see family and friends everywhere. Multiple trips to Italy allowed his family to stay close. Angelo was a wonderful example of a Catholic Christian man and a life- long member of Di Loreto Club. He attended Mass and received most of the sacraments at St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka, from his arrival in the U.S. to the time in which his dementia settled in. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 6 from 9:30 until 10:30AM at St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM with Father Jacob Meyer officiating. Angelo will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger. The family requested in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Monica Catholic Church. Bubb Funeral Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.
