Nancy L. Gruber, 80 passed away at 11:05am Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in St. Joseph Regional Med Center. Nancy was born on February 6, 1937 in Mishawaka to August and Irene (Van De Putte) Leavens. She was the co-owner of Gruber’s Supermarket and retired from St. Mary’s College, after 16 years, where she was the Executive Secretary for Academic Affairs. Nancy then worked part time at the Notre Dame Hammes Bookstore. She was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, its Sacred Heart & Rosary Society and St. Anne Society and was a Eucharistic Minister. At Our Lady, she was a past president of Home and School Assoc., chaired Card Party and Fashion Shows. Co-Chaired the first Annual OLH dinner dance, worked at multiple festivals and was a part of the OLH bakers group for Kolache. Nancy also wintered in Bradenton, FL where she was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph Parish. She volunteered in the Medjugorje conferences for over 20 years, assisting Queen of Peace Ministries. On July 4, 1957, at St. Bavo’s Catholic Church, in Mishawaka, she married John S. Gruber, Jr. who survives along with 2 daughters Sue (Gary) Mason of South Bend and Judy Gruber of Indianapolis, 2 sons John Gruber and Michael (Regena) Gruber both of South Bend, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Burial of her cremated remains will take place at 11:00am Saturday, October 20, 2018 in Sacred Heart Cemetery, located on the northeast corner of Western Avenue and Pine Road.

SOUTH BEND -- Nancy and John Gruber of South Bend celebrated their 50th anniversary with a family brunch July 8 at Tippecanoe Place Restaurant. John Gruber and Nancy Leavens married July 4, 1957, at St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka. They have four children, Susan Mason, John M. and Michael, all of South Bend, and Judith Gruber of Indianapolis. They also have 16 grandchildren. Since 2005, Mr. Gruber has been semiretired from sales at Michiana Insulation. Mrs. Gruber retired in 2003 from Saint Mary's College. They have lived in the area all of their lives.
