EDWARDSBURG - Leonard William "Bill" Gustafson, 73 years old, of Edwardsburg, MI, passed to his rest on May 30, 2014 at his home after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 15, 1940 in Chicago, the son of Frank and Ellen (Joraanstad) Gustafson, and has lived in Edwardsburg and the surrounding communities for the past 46 years. Bill graduated from Elkhart High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Alaska and Turkey. After an honorable discharge, Bill graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Business. He joined Miles Laboratories (Bayer) in December 1966 and worked numerous positions, retiring from Bayer as a Systems Analyst in 2007 after working for 41 years. Bill was known as a gentle and kind soul who was very generous with his time to both his family and his friends. He enjoyed working on his lawn, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an excellent golfer, lettering in High School and caddying locally as a young man. He was a member of Four Lakes Country Club for years and frequently went on golf trips to Traverse City, Alabama and Myrtle Beach. He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Edwardsburg. Bill is survived by his wife, Ann of 46 years. He has two sons, Matthew (Tammy) of Edwardsburg and Adam (Ellen) of Traverse City, MI. He has five grandchildren, Nicklaus and Nathan of Edwardsburg, and Emma, Onalee and Adelaide of Traverse City. Also surviving is his sister, Carolyn (John) Pelletier of Charleston, SC, and a brother-in-law, Ken (Sue Ann) Phillips of Sturgis, MI. Other family surviving is a nephew, Craig (Angie) Phillips of Fennville, MI and nieces Cristie Phillips of Kansas City, MO and Meghan (Maurice) Trezies of Charleston, SC. Bill's family who has passed are his parents, and his in-laws, Russell and Marie Phillips. Cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 5-8 PM at the Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Road, Edwardsburg. There will be a Memorial Service of Remembrance on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the church, where all may gather from 1:00-2:00 PM. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Reese, Pastor of the church. Concluding the service, the United States Air Force Honor Guard will play TAPS and fold the American Flag. This will end the service. Memorials in Bill Gustafson's name may be made to the Hope United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 624, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0624, or to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
