SOUTH BEND - Thomas Shelby Newgent Sr., 54, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in his sister's residence. Thomas was born on October 27, 1953, in South Bend, to the late Wilbur and Doris (Walters) Newgent. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Robert; and by his grandson, Tyler McClurken. He is survived by his three children, Amy (Lanty) Jones, Lisa Newgent and Thomas S. (Alexandra) Newgent Jr., all of South Bend; four grandchildren, Mikey Jones, Danielle Newgent, Joey Newgent and Shelby Newgent; three siblings, Michael (Sharol) Newgent Sr. of South Bend, Kathryn (Rich) Kanczuzewski of New Carlisle and Carol Jordanek of South Bend; former wife, Sue Newgent of South Bend; sisters-in-law, Joann Newgent of Mishawaka and Patricia Newgent of Edwardsburg; many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved; and two special friends, James Culp and Mark Cook. Tom loved his children and grandchildren, and loved to fish and drive in demolition derbies. He liked to raise chickens. They called him "Terrible Tom" at the South Bend Speedway. He loved going to the Blue Chip and Four Winds Casino. Tom was working at Steel Warehouse as a crane operator; he had also worked at Liberty Steel and at Custom Honing. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 14, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend.
