[N1664] Rita T. Trzop
Feb. 20, 1925 - Feb. 7, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Rita T. Trzop passed away on February 7, 2015, in her home on the family farm, which she loved dearly, just two weeks short of her 90th birthday. She was born in South Bend on February 20, 1925, to Stanley and Josephine (Cierzniak) Dombek. On May 17, 1947, she married Walter Trzop, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her four sisters: Mrs. Carrie Manuszak, Sr. M. Aurelia CR, Mrs. Gertrude Wieczorek and Mrs. Sophie Wieczorek. She is survived by a son, Walter Trzop (Mary Anne Schosker); a daughter, Ann Trzop (Dixie Flesher); a granddaughter, Michelle (Mark) Shreve; and special great-grandchildren, Conner and Emily Shreve; as well as her cats and beloved Australian Shepherd, Mia. Rita was a graduate of the Chicago School of Nursing and worked as an R.N. for Dr. W.J. Filipek. In addition to nursing she also worked as the night shift computer operator at the Health Quest Corporation from 1988 to 1995 and Bob's Super Store 1996 to 2005. Rita's love of nursing and caregiving also extended to any animal that crossed her doorway. From bringing newborn calves in the house during brutally cold winters to nursing baby pigs back to health, she cared for them all with love and kindness. The birds on her farm will miss her as well. From homemade peanut butter suet (for the wood-peckers) to the hundreds of pounds of sunflower seeds that she seemed to feed in a week, no bird that visited her yard would ever go hungry. Rita was also well-known for her exceptional Polish cooking and baking. Keeflies and pierogi were her specialties during the holidays. But it was her homemade bread, apple pies and apple slices, and chicken soup that will always be remembered by her family and friends. Rita's favorite Fall pastime was apple picking and making fresh cider with her apple press. She loved her vegetable garden and she took great pride in her many flower beds. Just up until last summer she still managed to mow the lawn on her John Deere mower. A very determined and independent woman, this past summer she insisted on freezing her own vegetables and took great pride in her bounty. She was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in New Carlisle, IN. Rita attended church every Sunday, even in inclement weather. She always said that St. Rita was a saint of strength and determination and our mom truly lived her life following those two words. She was selfless to the end, always putting her family and loved ones first. She loved to send food and goodies to her grandchildren. Her dedication to caring for her family was unwavering and she will be greatly missed. Our goal was to help mom live out her days at home on the family farm that she loved so dearly and we accomplished that goal. This was not always an easy task and it was not done without the help of family and friends. We would like to thank her team of 'guardian angels' including Becky Caldwell and Mark and Michelle who were only a phone call away. Becky was always willing to stay with mom whenever we were out of town. Memorial services for Rita will be held at 10:00 am with a funeral Mass immediately following at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church 55756 Tulip Rd New Carlisle, IN 46552. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery. To honor her love and compassion for animals, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Published in South Bend Tribune on Feb. 12, 2015
