MISHAWAKA - Goldie J. Domonkos, 90, died Sunday. She is survived by daughters, Judy (Bill) Hennig and Margaret (Kenneth) Michaels, sons, Andrew (Sandra) Domonkos and Steve (Denise) Domonkos, 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great- great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Thursday in St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. MISHAWAKA - Goldie J. Domonkos, 90, formerly of Erskine Blvd. in South Bend, passed away at 9:40 pm Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Michiana Health & Rehabilitation, Mishawaka. She was born October 8, 1923 in South Bend to the late John and Elizabeth (Erdelyi) Istenes, and remained a lifelong area resident. On June 30, 1945 at St. Stephens Church in South Bend, Goldie married Albert J. Domonkos, who preceded her in death on October 6, 2006. She was also preceded by her brother, John Istenes; and sister, Margaret Istenes. Goldie is survived by daughters, Judy (Bill) Hennig and Margaret (Kenneth) Michaels, both of Niles, MI; sons, Andrew (Sandra) Domonkos of Granger and Steve (Denise) Domonkos of Mishawaka; and nine grandchildren: Tracy (Matt) Longfellow of South Bend, Renae (Mark) Frigo of Glen Ellyn, IL, Amanda (Ken) Hirsch of Bremen, Jacob (Jen) Wozniak of Niles, Jennifer (Dennis) Robinson of Mishawaka, Kevin (Michelle) Domonkos of South Bend, Samuel (Abby Wiles) Domonkos of Goshen, Benjamin (Sarah) Domonkos of Mishawaka and Jacob (Lisa Veldman) Domonkos of South Bend. She is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Justina (Al) Schmucker, Daniel Bass, Luke and Maggie Frigo, Cairren, Bronson and Ayla Hirsch, Samantha and Molly Wozniak, Tyler and Dylan Robinson and Mary Domonkos; as well as three great-great-grandchildren, Aloysius (Charlie), Camden, and Avan Schmucker. Goldie was a longtime member of St. Matthew Cathedral, where she was active in the Rosary Society, PTA, a den mother with the Cub Scouts, and school secretary. Goldie and Al, while dating, enjoyed participating in many Hungarian Harvest Dances. Goldie also attended Queen of Peace Church in Mishawaka. Mom had many friends through the years, including those from St. Matthews, the "Chatterettes" club, TOPS, neighbors, and her dining companions at Michiana Health and Rehabilitation. She loved being with her family, especially at gatherings for special occasions and holidays. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, playing the piano, playing games with her grandchildren, and preparing Hungarian dishes and pastries. Mom was a very kind woman who had a wonderful sense of humor and a smile for everyone. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Thursday, March 6, 2014 in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN 46613. Graveside services and burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Goldie may be donated to St. Matthew Cathedral. Online condolences may be left for the Domonkos family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
