SOUTH BEND - Goldie C. Lanko, 88, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011, in Arborwood Living Center. Goldie was born on September 17, 1922, in South Bend, to Julius and Ethel (Maszaros) Karacson. She retired from the University of Notre Dame in 1987 and had also been employed by Bendix and Smoler Brothers. Mrs. Lanko was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, its St. Ann Society and Harvest House. On June 16, 1945, as Goldie Karacson, she married Frank E. Lanko, He died on February 10, 1972. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Fodrocy and Mary Cytacki; and by a brother, Julius Karacson. Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne (Clint) Draeger of Edwardsburg, MI; a son, Frank (Lynda) Lanko of South Bend; four grandchildren, Frank (Heidi) Lanko, Renie (Art) Wolf, Tim Lanko and Patrick Draeger; and two great-grandchildren Shelby Wolf and Jacob Wolf. Goldie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who dearly loved her family and will be greatly missed by all. Her family would like to send special thanks to the staff at Arborwood and Hospice for the great care our mother received during her illness" A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-8 Friday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church or to the Center for Hospice Care.
