SOUTH BEND - Carmen D. Mahnesmith, 85, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, in his daughter's home. He was born March 13, 1924, in Albion, IN, to the late Willis and Ruth (Homsher) Mahnesmith. On June 26, 1944, in Albion, IN, he married Violet Marian Noe, who preceded him in death on December 15, 2008. Mr. Mahnesmith is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Mahnesmith (Dr. Thomas) Johnson of Auburn, IN, and Dr. Carolyn (Dan) Balog of South Bend, IN; son, Dr. Randolph C. (Kathy) Mahnesmith of Fishersville, VA; five grandchildren, Gregory (Dr. April) Johnson, JD of Avon, IN, Randolph (Lia) Johnson of Columbus, OH, Dr. Staci-Marie (David) Norman of South Bend, Dr. Natali Marian (Marc Wenkus) Balog of South Bend and Ethan Randolph Mahnesmith of Washington, DC; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Violet Johnson, Riley David Norman, Calla-Marie Norman and Amelia Marian Wenkus; a sister, Betty Jo Saggars of Ligonier, IN; and a brother, Lee H. Mahnesmith of Terre Haute, IN. His grandson, Matthew Martin Mahnesmith, two sisters, Mary Kathryn Stump and Sara Jane Conrad, and one brother, Berton W. Mahnesmith, preceded him in death. During World War II, Carmen served his country aboard the USS Charger. He worked for 42 years as a depot supervisor for Liquid Carbonic Corp., retiring in 1986. An accomplished swimmer, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, gardening, and being the family storyteller. Mr. Mahnesmith treated his in-laws as though they were his own family. Together with his wife of 64 years, Violet, Carmen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, South Bend. Carmen lived his life as a loving, caring, tender and true "gentle" man, supportive of his wife and family. He was the strongest and most humble of men. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Rev. Lindsey Carnes from the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Sweet Cemetery, Albion. Friends are invited to visit with the family and share their memories of Carmen from 6:00-8:00 p.m. today and at 10 a.m. prior to the services Tuesday in the funeral home.
