As Troy’s favorite undergraduate professor, Dr. Patrick Gilvary, began in his obituary, “If you are reading this obituary, it means I am probably dead.” This was Troy’s sense of humor, and if he had had a chance to write this himself, it would be similar. Troy L. Dobosiewicz, Ph.D., 51, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 4, 2023, in his Muncie, IN home. Troy was born in South Bend, IN to Leonard and Mary Ann (Mnichowski) Dobosiewicz. Troy is survived by his parents; his loving partner, Jim McNab; brothers Todd Dobosiewicz and Ted Dobosiewicz; niece Elaina; and nephew William. Troy was an Assistant Professor of Theatre Education and Theatre History at Ball State University from 2014 to 2023. While at BSU, Troy wrote Teaching Acting with Practical Aesthetics. This was the culmination of a lifetime of work dedicated to teaching theatre to young people. While at Ball State, he was fortunate to share his love of teaching theatre to future educators. Previously, he taught theatre, speech, and English at the secondary level at Marian High School in Mishawaka, IN; Broad Run High School in Loudoun County, VA; and Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax County, VA. Troy earned his Ph.D. in Theatre from Arizona State University. This was an achievement of a lifelong goal ever since his grandmother called him “professor.” Troy earned his Masters in Theatre History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communication from the University of Dayton. He graduated from Marian High School in Mishawaka, IN. Troy had a love for his family, his friends, travel, a “good bit”, and antics - especially if he was in the middle of them. Like his father Lenny, he had the gift of gab. He enjoyed playing the organ (multiple types), singing in the choir, his faith, and his partner. He would be forever happy that he outlived Eydie Gormé, his longtime nemesis, who “killed Allen Ludden due to her cheating on Password which left his beloved Betty White a widow all those years.” Troy would be disappointed that Quincy, M.E., did not call for a “coroner’s inquest.” Visitation will be 4-6pm on Thursday, February 9, 2023, in Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN 46614. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 12pm on Friday, February 10, 2023, in St. Jude Catholic Church, where family and friends may begin to gather at 11am. Rev. John Delaney and Rev. Ryan Pietrocarlo, C.S.C. will preside at the Mass. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance AC306 Muncie, IN 47306 for the soon to be established Dr. Troy Dobosiewicz (Dob) scholarship for Theatre Educators.
