SOUTH BEND - Harriet T. Opaczewski, 83, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Monday, October 19, 2009, in Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation, South Bend. Harriet was born August 9, 1926, in South Bend, Indiana, to Casimir and Sophie (Gierzynska) Klota. On January 25, 1947, Harriet married Stanley C. Opaczewski, who preceded her in death on December 20, 1981. Surviving are her children, Dennis C. Opaczewski of South Bend, Darlene (Jerry) Andrews of South Bend, Gail (Ronald) Ryniak of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Patricia (Jim) Kertai of South Bend; grandchildren, Nicholas Cernak, Jonathon Cernak, Sarah Ryniak, Emily Ryniak, Nicole (Cara) Kertai, Mark Kertai and Luke Kertai; a brother, Thomas Klota of McCordsville, IN; sisters-in-law, Theresa and Juanita Klota of South Bend, Indiana. Brothers, Casimir, Valentine and Jerome Klota, all preceded her in death. Harriet was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Bend, and a former member of the Harvest House, Rosary Society, Apostleship of Prayer, and the Grandmothers Club. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and their pet dogs, Sophie, Hershery and Riley. She was an avid reader and loved cooking, and listening to Elvis and country music. One of her fondest memories was her second honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls with her late husband. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2009, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Bend, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 920 Wilber Street, South Bend, IN 46628.
