Arnold William Joers
July 3, 1922 - December 12, 2022
Arnold William Joers, 100, residing in his son’s home, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, December 12, 2022. Arnold William Joers was born July 3, 1922, in La Porte County, Indiana to Louis Herman and Bertha (Irk) Joers. Arnold grew up in Beverly Shores, Indiana, and graduated from Michigan City Elston High School. He attended Indiana University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps at age 21. During the war, he was stationed in Fiuggi, Italy, where he was the 1st pilot flying a B-17 in the 15th Airborne Division 463rd Bomb Group. After returning home, he returned to Indiana University and graduated with a degree in business. It was there he met his beautiful wife, Carolyn Rea, through his identical twin brother, Ronald. They were married for 69 years until her passing in 2018. Arnold was a member of several organizations including The 100 Dance Club, Chamber of Commerce, Clay Church, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Home Builders Association, Elks Club, and Morris Park Country Club, where he was the oldest and longest-standing member. His love of golf started at age 10 with caddying and later playing. In 1940, his team which included his brother Ronald, won the Indiana High School team championship with Arnold shooting a 1-over par 73. After graduating from college in 1949, Arnold and Carolyn got married. They lived in New Orleans, where he worked for Armstrong Cork Company, which was his start in floor covering, and later for Bob Barnes Company, with hopes of buying the company. When that did not become a reality, he and Carolyn moved to South Bend to work in the restaurant business with his twin brother, Joers Cocktail Bar and Grill. In 1954, he started one of his four businesses, Joers Floor Center Carpet One. Arnold also developed and built several properties in the Michiana area. Arnold’s hobbies included flying his private plane and golfing, but his favorite was dancing with his wife, Carolyn. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents along with four siblings, Ruby Skerrick, Lovella Forsythe, Ronald A. Joers, and Gilbert Joers. Left to cherish his memories are his three sons: Jeffrey Rea Joers, Ronald William (Cindy) Joers, and Randall Robert (Julie) Joers; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Rea Joers II, Brooke Caroline (Dustin) Calhoun, Jennifer Anne (Michael) Marderosian, Julie Kristen (Richard) Quigley, Ronald William (Christine) Joers Jr., Randall Robert Joers Jr., and Katelynn Rea Joers; and ten great-grandchildren. Arnold never met a person he did not consider a friend. He was always upbeat and positive, never saying a bad word about anyone or anything. He will truly be missed by all of his family and friends. Funeral services for Arnold will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17, 2022, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. Brian Durand officiating. Military honors and entombment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Friday, December 16, 2022, in the funeral home as well as one hour prior to services on Saturday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Clay Church, 52866 N. Ironwood Road, South Bend, IN 46635. Online condolences may be left for the Joers family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
