SOUTH BEND - Walter J. West, 73, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:54 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN, following a battle with cancer. He was born on January 15, 1943, in South Bend, IN, to Stanley and Estelle (Stanek) West, “previously known as Wesolowski,” and was a lifelong South Bend resident. Along with his father, Stanley (Wesolowski) West; he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jay A. West. Walter retired in 2003 as a firefighter with the South Bend Fire Department, where he worked for 32 years. He served his time at Station #2 and retired from Station #9. Walter is survived by his mother, Estelle West of South Bend, IN; his son, Daniel J. (Shelly) West of South Bend, IN; two grandchildren, Kevin West, Jessica Smith; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Jane (Louis) Bukowski of Mishawaka, IN, and Susan T. Schroeter of South Bend, IN. Walter attended St. Aloysius Academy and Cadet School in New Lexington, OH, from 1955 - 1957. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1961, where he participated in Track & Field and placed 3rd in the state finals. Walter was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served his country from 1962 - 1964. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, Drag Racing, track & field, golf, Notre Dame football, and most of all, spending time with his buddies. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral services will take place at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, where Military Honors will take place.
