William P. Mnichowski

SOUTH BEND - William P. Mnichowski, 78, passed away at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, in Minneapolis, MN. William was born on September 26, 1931, in South Bend, IN, to William and Elizabeth (Rozsonics) Greene. His father died in a work-related accident when William was just 4 years old. In 1940 his mother, Elizabeth, married Ervin Mnichowski, who lovingly adopted William as his own. Both parents, Ervin and Elizabeth Mnichowski, preceded him in death. On October 15, 1955, he married Barbara Biedess, who preceded him in death on December 21, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Clay, in July 2006. He is survived by his five children, William J. (Cheryl) Mnichowski of Fallon, NV, Christopher P. (Linda) Mnichowski of Bucyrus, KS, David A. Mnichowski of South Bend, IN, Thomas M. (Pamela) Mnichowski of South Bend, IN, and Barbara Gray of Bucyrus, KS; 10 grandchildren, LeeAnn (Marshall) Neumann, Emily Mnichowski, Krista Mnichowski, Brittany Mnichowski, Mallory Mnichowski, Thomas Mnichowski, Jacob Mnichowski, Helena Gray, Holly Gray and Hannah Gray. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Raymond) Irby of South Bend, IN; by his brother-in-law, Howard Clay of South Bend, IN; and by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. William honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked in the auto industry and retired from AM General in 1996 after 30+ years. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend and was an usher there for many years. Both William and Barbara had many good memories of living on Grace Street for many years. William was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the American Legion, serving as Commander of Post 350 in Spring Hill, KS, a member of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (40&8). He loved his Notre Dame football and served 40+ years as usher and gate captain. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and being with family and friends who love and miss him. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. today, July 6, 2010, at Queen of the Holy Rosary, 22779 Metcalf, Bucyrus, KS. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Friday, July 9, 2010, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery with military honors. Pallbears will be Paul and Ervin Guzman, Howard Clay, Jeff Desits, Dan Biedess and Ray Grummel. Memorial contributions may be made to Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic School in Bucyrus, KS.
