[N34736] John J. DeVolder
September 9, 1958 ~ March 18, 2023 (age 64)

John Joseph DeVolder, 64, a lifelong resident of South Bend, IN, took his journey to heaven on March 18, 2023 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was born on September 9, 1958 in South Bend IN, the son of Patricia DeVolder (Morse) and the late Rudolph DeVolder, both of South Bend, IN. John grew up with six loving siblings, two brothers and four sisters. Widely regarded as one of the best baseball players at that time, John shared a love of baseball with all his Clay High School baseball teammates. John served as a volunteer umpire around the area little leagues. He loved the White Sox and always kept score when at a game. John spent his professional career as an HVAC contractor. John was a simple person and wasn’t one for flashy cars but loved Volkswagons. He could load a complete HVAC system on the roof rack of his little blue bug back in the day. On weekends for many years, you’d find John making pizza at Jimmy’s Pizza. He loved the interaction with the people he met there. Often, he would go bowling with the crew after work and became family there too. In his early years, John loved going on adventures on his BMW motorcycle. He toured the country on it and loved being out West. John was known as a kind, gentle friend. He was family to many of his friends and always there to lend a hand. Lovingly known as "Uncle John" he was revered by all his nieces and nephews and even the children of his dear friends. He is remembered for his frequent attendance at little league baseball and for his piggyback rides. John touched the lives of so many people and if you’re reading this, hopefully you were one of them. He was loved by all, and his loss will leave a void in so many lives. John is survived by his mother, Patricia DeVolder, South Bend, IN, his siblings, Mari Kay (Gary) McStay, Fairfield, ID, Marcia (Paul) Abrams, Granger, IN, Maureen (Robert) Jamieson, Granger, IN, Andrew (Maria) DeVolder, Gilbert, AZ, Patrick DeVolder, Mishawaka, IN, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to South Bend Regional Medical Center Residency Program, Mishawaka, Indiana. The family also wishes to express their deep gratitude for the compassionate care given to John at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.A celebration of life visitation for John will be Friday, March 24, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, Indiana.
