SOUTH BEND - Mr. John A. Salay, 88, died early Tuesday morning after several medical complications. John was born on August 12, 1920, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident. His parents were Joseph and Gizella Szalay of Sopron, Hungary. John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Erma Salay; his son, the Rev. Dr. John-Paul Salay of Chicago; and his brother, Joseph Szalay of South Bend. His sister, Mary Niezgodski, preceded him in death. John was a veteran of World War II and served in England. For almost a quarter of a century he worked at Studebaker's and retired from A.M. General Corp. After retirement, John enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He will be remembered for his commitment to his family, work ethic and quiet faith. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Woodland. The funeral service will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Woodland, with the Rev. Karl Brenner officiating. Burial will follow at the church's cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Woodland, 15697 New Road, Mishawaka, IN 46544; or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
