She was an avid Notre Dame Football fan & frequent attendee. Her first date with John was a Notre Dame Football game. She was passionate about travel & her Hungarian heritage, attributing her adventurous nature to the gypsy in her. As a young woman, Marian traveled internationally on a freighter ship. Japan was her favorite stop. Marian loved the performing arts, especially Madame Butterfly. She & John shared their love of travel, history, art, music, antiques, reading, sports, games, animals & nature with their children. In the midst of Indiana winters, Marian & John were known to surprise their children with trips to the local Holiday Inn Holidome for indoor swimming & games, and once the surprise was a Hawaiian Islands adventure. Marian carefully planned annual long summer vacation car trips to Florida & out West, stopping & sharing the beautiful sites with her children. Marian participated in sports with family including ice skating, sledding, inner tubing down the river, white water rafting, hiking, & skiing. She enjoyed camping so much that sometimes it was just in a tent in the yard. Food was a family favorite. Marian & John were regulars most morning at local restaurants, especially the J & A, Pancake House & Bob Evans. Marian made friends feel like family. From the beginning, the Hammers from across Portage Rd were family. Marian & John incorporated numerous medical colleagues & business associates into the family. Their children called many of these dear friends "Aunt" & "Uncle". Buckwheat pancake gatherings were always the talk.Marian believed in service, giving back to her community & making the world a better place. She taught her children "in helping others you help yourself", even encouraging & driving them to their volunteer services. Marian volunteered for many organizations over the years, including Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, Kids First, Guardian Ad Litem, Corvilla for developmental disabilities, Leighton Center for Senior Health, and the food bank. She had a passion for letter writing to evoke awareness & change, contributing letters to the South Bend Tribune's Voice of The People for school bus safety & Michiana Point of View for child abuse prevention. Marian lobbied in the State of Indiana for school bus safety laws including safety belts and arms. She went to local classrooms teaching young children in age appropriate terms about the adverse health issues of tobacco in the No Butts About It program. In 1995, Marian was awarded 1995 Older Woman of The Year by the State of Indiana for her vast volunteer work. In midlife, Marian enrolled herself in an ovarian cancer research study for intra-abdominal chemotherapy to help medical advancement at the most personal level. When asked by her child," what were the best advancements you encountered in your lifetime, Mom?" She responded, "Penicillin and the Polio Vaccine." Marian cared deeply about people. She often took her children to neglected old cemeteries around the community to piece back together broken gravestones, pick up trash and mow the grass, thus passing on the importance to respect, help and value both humanity and our environment, especially, if no one else knows what you are doing. Her secret volunteer efforts were many.
