SOUTH BEND - Francis J. "Frank" Nowak, 80, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2007, in Memorial Hospital. Frank was born on September 29, 1926, in South Bend, to Frank and Josephine (Mikula) Nowak. Mr. Nowak was president of the Zahoran Funeral Home, Inc., a member of the National Funeral Directors Assoc., Indiana Funeral Directors Assoc., Northern Indiana Funeral Directors Assoc., Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, D.F.V. German Club and the former St. Anthony Sick Benefit Society, and was a World War II Navy veteran. Frank was a very talented singer, whose magnificent voice graced many weddings and funerals with his most requested hymn, the "Ave Maria." He would also perform his favorite, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," for family and friends. On October 4, 1947, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church in South Bend, he married the former Frances A. Zahoran. She died on February 28, 2000. He was also preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters, and by a daughter-in-law, Debra K. Nowak. Surviving are six sons, Mark (Debby) Nowak of Topsham, ME, Thomas (Debra) Nowak, Michael (Melanie) Nowak, Phillip (Anne) Nowak and Patrick (Lori) Nowak, all of South Bend, and John Nowak of San Diego, CA; 13 grandchildren, Trisha Montgomery, Andrew Nowak, Toby Nowak, Lisa Nowak, Anthony Nowak, Matthew Nowak, Phillip Nowak, Aaron Nowak, Christian Nowak, Sammy Nowak, Brandon Nowak, Justin Nowak and Melissa Nowak; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia DeMarco of New Carlisle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2007, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial with military services will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church.
