On Apr. 28, 1902, Rev. Eligius Raczynski, C. S. C., Pastor at St. Casimer's Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana, married Alphons Dewitt and Helena Cylka.

Alphons died the next year. His date and place of death are given in his Indiana death certificate for which the physician was the informant. He reported that Alfonse was married and had been a blacksmith. It was his understanding that Alfonse had been born Aug. 28, 1879 in Belgium to Charles & Angela DeWitte.

In 1905, Helena remarried. On July 13, 1905, Rev. H. J. Pannakker, C. S. C., of Sacred Heart Church, married Helen Dewitte and Ed Defreese in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Helen's marriage application identifies her as the daughter of Paul & Helen Cylka who had been born in South Bend on Apr. 25, 1884. It was her second marriage. Ed Defreese was born April 10, 1884 in Mishawaka, Indiana to August & Mary Defreese. It was his first marriage. At the time of the 1910 census, Helen and Ed DeFreese and their son Edwin were living with Helen's sister Anna McDonough and her family in South Bend. Helen had had two children, one living.

At the time of the 1916 and 1926 censuses of Canada, the Defreese family was living in Alberta. At the time of the 1940 census, Helena and three of the Defreese children were back in South Bend while Edward and two of their children were living in Los Angeles, California. The California Death Index includes both Helen and Edward Defreese, both born in April of 1884 in Indiana, and both died in Los Angeles County. Edward died Nov. 2, 1948, and Helen died Oct. 15, 1965.
