Richard E. "Sobey" Sobczak SR, 78, of West Washington Street, South Bend, passed away at 12:32am on Sunday, September 11, 2005, in Hospice House. He was born on November 16, 1926, in South Bend, to Joseph S. and Lottie (Pietrzak) Sobczak, who have both preceded him in death, along with a brother, Joseph C. Sobczak, and sisters, Veronica Budny, Josephine Dombkowski, Margaret Gundeck and Virginia Smiecinski. On May 30, 1955, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend, Richard married Patricia A. Woltman. Surviving Richard are his wife, Patricia; daughter, Ann Marie of Westchester IL; sons, Richard E Jr. of South Bend and Mark D. Sobczak of Austin TX; and two sisters, Dorothy Sobieski and Gertrud Jaworski, both of South Bend. Richard worked as a rate analyst with the trucking industry. He had worked at Norwalk Truck Lines, Consolidated Freight Ways, Associated Truck Lines and A.M. General. He tended bar and worked bingo at St. Hedwig's Memorial Center for over 20 years. He was past president of the St. Hedwig Holy Name Society, was a member of the American Legion Post #357, and the Army & Navy Union, Richard graduated from South Bend Catholic High School before serving in the US Army. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 14, from 2 to 8pm in St Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A vigil service will be held at 7pm. Funeral services will be on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at 10am in St Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow at ST Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of St Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend IN 46637.
