Brother John I. Schuszler, age 82, died on January 7, 2021 at Columba Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, IN. He was born in Cleveland, OH on June 8, 1939, the second of three children to Joseph and Adeline (Tillman) Schuszler. He attended Saint Patrick Elementary School and graduated from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH in 1957. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1957 taking final vows in 1962. During his 60 years as a Brother of Holy Cross, Brother John either taught industrial arts classes and/or served as the director of maintenance in a number of schools in the United States, in Africa and in Bangladesh. From 1962 through 1972 he was on the faculty at Archbishop Hoban High School, Akron, OH as both a teacher and member of the maintenance team. In 1972 he was assigned to Father Gibault School for Boys, Terre Haute, IN as a teacher and the maintenance director. From 1977-1980 he served as the “coordinator” of the Antoinette Tubman Child Welfare Center in Monrovia, Liberia. Brother John returned to the States in 1980 and served on the staff at St. Joseph Farm, Granger, IN for one year. Later in 1980, he returned to the missions as a member of the faculty at St. Joseph School of Industrial Trades, Dhaka, Bangladesh. When he returned to the U.S. in 1982, he was assigned to Archbishop Hoban High School. In 1985 he was a member of the staff at Le Mans Academy, Rolling Prairie, IN, and in 1986 he was hired as a sixth grade teacher at St. Catherine School, Cleveland, OH. He was assigned to Holy Trinity High School in Chicago, IL in the fall of 1986 where he would serve as maintenance director for the next twenty-one years. Ending his time at Holy Trinity in 2007, Brother John spent one final year of active ministry at St. Joseph Farm before moving to Columba Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame where he lived in both semi-retirement and full retirement until his death. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at St. Joseph Chapel from 10:00-11:00 AM on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by Rev. William Blum, C.S.C. at 11:00 AM to be followed by burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery of the Village. Both visitation and the liturgy are for Holy Cross Community members and the family of Brother John only. The funeral will be live-streamed. See the link above the obituary.
