SOUTH BEND - Ethel M. Gotowka, 96, passed away at 5:30 pm Friday, September 15, 2017, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Ethel was born on October 10, 1920, in South Bend, to Paul and Ethel (Gorbitz) Szalay. On January 12, 1946, she married Leo J. Gotowka. He preceded her in death along with her parents, brother, Paul “Baldy” Szalay, and his wife Christine, sister, Ann Farkas and her husband Julius, sister-in-law, Sylvia Szalay, and niece, Julie Rodbarry. Surviving are a brother, Charles Szalay of Livonia, Mi; nieces and nephews, Don (Joyce) Farkas of Prior Lake, MN, Fred (Cindy) Farkas of Clarendon Hills, IL, Kathleen Scheu of Westfield, IN, Mary Elizabeth (David) Horvath of South Bend, Rose Ann Szalay of San Diego, CA, Mary Ruth (Matt) Rowe of Livonia and Peter Szalay of Livonia; and 16 great-nieces and nephews. Ethel was a gracious and loving lady who had bowled at PNA and Beacon. She was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, the Altar & Rosary Society, PNA #83, K of C #533 Ladies Auxiliary, William Penn Assoc., Rum Village Neighborhood Assoc., Uniroyal Ladies Retirees and Widow to Widower. Words cannot express our gratitude for the wonderful staff at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. They treated Ethel with dignity and respect and loved her unconditionally. Thank you to all who were involved with her care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 20, 2017, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may visit from 4-7 Tuesday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 5:00 pm.
