SOUTH BEND - Joan Rose Walkowiak, beloved wife and mother, 81, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2011. Joan was born October 29, 1930 in South Bend to Ignatius William and Valeria (Modracki) Chrzanowski. She had been employed with Uniroyal for 10 years and Kresge's variety store while in High School. On September 29, 1956, Joan married Daniel Walkowiak who survives. Surviving with her husband is a daughter Jolynn (Donald) Kuehr of Carmel, Indiana; a son, James Gerard Walkowiak of South Bend, Indiana; and a grandson, Edon James Kuehr. Joan was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral Catholic Church, a former member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she was very active in the Rosary Society, a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Notre Dame Circle, where she served on the Charity Ball committee and was a volunteer. She was a Cub Scout Leader, member of St. John Seniors, the St. Hedwig's Golden Cluster, serving on the task force and the St. Casmir's Seniors Club. She volunteered at Coquillard School in the school library and served on the PTA. She played in the euchre club and bowled for several ladies' leagues. Joan graduated from South Bend Catholic High School and attended Business College. The family appreciates the care received from St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and the care from all her friends throughout her illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2011 in St. Matthew Cathedral Catholic Church, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the Mass begins. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Cathedral, the Humane Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or the St. Vincent Foundation, give.stvincent.org.
