===============

The year of birth shown above is based on the year inscribed on her gravestone. Her age varies in her records.

On Dec. 27, 1904, the Synave family, Edward, 25, Marie, 22, & Leona, an infant, arrived at the port of New York aboard the S.S. Wanderland. They were from Belgium and were on their way to Mishawaka, Indiana where they would join a cousin, Edward De Neva.

Daughter, Margaret Synave, was born and died in 1905. (indiana death certificate)

The 1910 census of South Bend, Indiana, includes the family of Edmund Senave, 30, born in Belgium, a laborer in a plow works, and his wife, Mary, 27, also born in Belgium. The census indicates that they and their daughter Leona M. Synave, 5, had immigrated in 1904 (sic), that Edmund and Mary had been married 7 years, and that Mary had had 4 children, 3 living. Son Florman, 4, and daughter Emie, 1, had been born in Indiana.

The 1920 census of South Bend, includes Edmund Synave, his wife, Mary M., and children: Leona M., Florman, Emma I., Paul, and Irine M.

Edmund died in 1928 (Indiana death certificate).

At the time of the 1940 census of South Bend, sons, Florman, 31, and Moris, 17, were living with Mary.

Mary Synave died in South Bend in 1943. Her full date and place of death are given in her Indiana death certificate for which the informant was Mrs. Leona Morgan, known from other records to be her daughter. She reported that her mother was the widow of Edmund. It was her understanding that her mother had been born July 12, 1879 in Belgium to Carl Louis & Juliana Hellebuyn.

Note: other records suggest that her maiden name may have been spelled Hellebuyk.
