Omer J. Boembeke
July 20, 1920 - April 14, 2011
MISHAWAKA - Omer J. Boembeke, 90, passed away early on Thursday, April 14, 2011 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Omer was born on July 20, 1920 in Mishawaka as the son of Remi and Mary (Van Ooteghem) Boembeke. He was preceded in death by his parents. On February 2, 1946 at St. Casimir's he married the former Gertrude A. Ruszkowski. Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Gertrude; daughters, Emily (Bill) Stauffacher of Mishawaka and Elaine "Jo" (Bruce) Huffman of South Bend; a son, Bruce Boembeke (Janice Bussert) of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren, Erik (Angela) Boembeke, Chad Boembeke, Brice (Lupe) Boembeke, Jason (Diedri) Stauffacher, Amy (Aaron) Schramski, Heather (Steve) Rokop and Michael Huffman and 14 great grandchildren, Courtney, Kaitlyn, Payton, Prestyn, Parker and Maxwell Boembeke, Drew, Brynn and Reese Stauffacher, Mikaela and Reilly Schramski, Kylynn Rokop, Alicia Taylor and Adam Ruff. Omer was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was in the Medical Corp serving his Country proudly during WW II. He retired from Wheelabrator after 44 years and was well known by many for his delicious garden tomatoes. He was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church and the BK Club in Mishawaka. Omer enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his loving family and friends. He was a lifetime area resident. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, April 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, April 18 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka with Rev. Barry England officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, where burial honors will be given by VFW Post 320/American Legion 151 burial team.
